Grand Canyon Women: Lives Shaped by Landscape

Author: Betty Leavengood
Average review score:

Very well written with a fabuolous sense of humor
A very inspirational book and a must for anyone interested in the Grand Canyon. Betty's sense of humor captivated me throughout.

excellent treatment of a fascinating subject
Ms. Leavengood delivers a captivating look at the lives of women who helped to shape the Grand Canyon - not geologically, but culturally. These early explorers helped to open up the Canyon for the millions who would follow, and the author does a great job in capturing the both the appeal of the Canyon and of the women who first made the trip. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the Grand Canyon or the human spirit.

Grand Canyon: Exploring a Natural Wonder
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (March, 2001)
Author: Wendell Minor
Average review score:

Exploring a Natural Wonder
Renowned author and illustrator Wendell Minor takes readers on an extraordinary journey in the picture book GRAND CANYON. Minor, who has graced book covers with his art for more than twenty-five years, is also one of the most revered children's book illustrators around. He's done collaborations with Newbery Award-winning author Jean Craighead George, including EVERGLADES, ARCTIC SON, and the soon-to-be-published CLIFFHANGER, as well as critically acclaimed books with Eve Bunting, Anne Turner, and Charlotte Zolotow. Now, he tells of his experiences in one of America's most celebrated natural treasures, with lyrical text and stunning watercolors. For twelve days he spent time on the South Rim of the canyon, sketching and painting the huge rocks, the dramatic skies, and the abundant wildlife in the area. The colors are rich and intense, yet at the same time peaceful, perfectly complementing the words. You feel as if you're right there, standing over the canyon with space all around you. This is an excellent introduction for kids to a magnificent place, and even if, like me, you've never visited the Grand Canyon, you'll feel as if you were taking the journey and living the experience, too.

Looking Carefully
This is a thoughtful look at the wonders of the Grand Canyon as seen by a noted American illustrator who took his time to look carefully at and sketch some of that space. The gorgeous watercolors painted from his sketches convey the beauty and the color of the Grand Canyon and the accompanying text from his journal help put the images into perspective. Minor makes the spaces come alive.

Review on A Grand Celebration
I will tell you about how great the book "A Grand Celebration" is for children and their grandparents. I think the book shows both grandchildren and grandparents and how wonderful a relationship can be. It makes me think about all the nice things I do with my grandparents. I really liked the book and would definitely recommend it to everyone I know. It was fun to read...

A Grand Celebration is Truly Grand!
What could be more wonderful than a book that extols the virtues of grandparenthood! The relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is truly unique. In this book, this relationship is so beautifully set forth, both in the poetry and the marvelous illustrations. I can't wait to share this treasure with my grandchildren, and then in turn, be able to share some of my own memories and thoughts. A welcome addition to children's literature!
With appreciation to the authors....Barbara Kreindler

Grand Dragon: D.C. Stephenson and the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana
Published in Paperback by Purdue University Press (December, 1994)
Author: M. William Lutholtz
Average review score:

Required reading for those interested in the KKK
This book tells the story of the KKK in Indiana. It turns out this was a real hotbed for the KKK and they were extremely powerful controlling cities, police, the governor. If you think of the KKK as Southern, this book will set you straight. The head of the Indiana KKK was D.C. Stephenson who was tried for rape and murder. A truly scary book, but a page burner and dead-on historically.

An INCREDIBLE but TRUE tale in Hoosier history!
If you like true "whodunit" stories that still leave you wondering at the end, then this is the book for you. An unfathomable story leading up to a 1920s "Trial of the Century," Lutholtz raises almost as many questions as he answers in his quest for understanding of the mind and actions of D.C. Stephenson, a man so powerful he brought down a governor and a mayor in seemingly one fell swoop, controlled the police chief of a major metropolitan city of the time and had the temerity to claim "I am the law in Indiana." The author does a superb job in uncovering information concerning Stephenson's trial for murder that many Hoosiers don't seem comfortable discussing. Lutholtz also offers excellent coverage of the lawyers and judges involved, and the dangers and pitfalls they faced in trying a man who terrified just about everybody!

Grand Fathers: Reminiscences, Poems, Recipes and Photos of the Keepers of Our Traditions
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (June, 1999)
Author: Nikki Giovanni
Average review score:

African American men as an affirming influence
This sensitive, lovely set of reminiscences has at itsfoundation a very important theme. African American men are present inthe lives of their families and have made a difference. Too often stereotypes emphasize that African American men are not around their families and do not take any responsibility for them, and that most African American families are run by females. This book counters such unfounded stereotypes with wonderful recollections of the great influence African American men have had on their families. This influence is very important for readers to recognize, and this book provides readers with understanding that will hopefully contradict negative stereotypes. END

In Praise of Grand Fathers
Nikki Giovanni has opened our hearts to the songs, influence, and love of many grandfathers. The stories, poems, and photographs of the beloved grandfathers of others quickly embrace the unconditional love many of us received from our own grandfathers, and stir the desires for that love from those who were denied. This book made me laugh, cry, and remember a grandfather who was so special to me. This outstanding collection spans generations and cultures. It would be a welcome addition to a literature study of grandfathers as it invites readers to recall their own memoirs of these significant people in our lives. As Giovani states in her introduction, "Grandfathers are like the rest of us who are struggling to make sense of this world. They are the tears we shed. They are the stars we wish upon, for it is grandfathers... who let us see what loving relationships should be." Read this book to renew your own memories and appreciation of grandfathers.

Grand Finishes for Tile: Home Installation Projects 101
Published in Paperback by Griffin Trade Paperback (October, 2001)
Authors: Matt Nikitas, Amy Evans, and Ronald Monk
Average review score:

a useful, practical book
This book was invaluable in our bathroom project. First it gave us the confidence to get started, and then it answered all our questions during the project. With the aid of this book we ripped our bathroom out to the studs, and put in a completely new bathroom. The book covers materials, techniques, helpful hints, and cleanup. Just as an example, after we got the tile off the walls and were faced with a 300lb cast iron tub, we checked the book and found that we could smash the tub into pieces with a sledgehammer for easy removal. Problem solved.

Now we're thinking about doing the kitchen.

Grand Finishes for Tile
An excellent book for beginners. Like Nikitas's other books, I found this one thorough, and clearly written. The projects are laid out just in the right order for an on-again-off-again home improvement dude like me to follow. I tried a mortar bed for the first time and it came out amazingly well: this goes in my reference library.

The Grand Inquisitor: With Related Chapters from the Brothers Karamazov
Published in Hardcover by Hackett Pub Co (October, 1993)
Authors: Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Charles B. Guignon, Fyodor M. Dostoevsky, and Constance Garnett
Average review score:

An interesting Christian view
This book is a collection of select chapters from "The Brothers Karamazov."

There is a lengthy introduction that explains in detail the author's philosophy and how it is revealed in each of the four chapters presented here.

"The Brothers Make Friends" is simply here to introduce the two brothers Ivan and Alyosha. Ivan is the Europeanized lover of science, and Alyosha is the young Romantic. Dostoevsky uses his characters as representatives of different worldviews, and develops action in such a way to show how each worldview could be flawed.

In "Rebellion," Ivan's character is developed as he reveals his disdain at the suffering of children and how cruel it seems since they are without sin. Ivan says that he realizes there is suffering and that no one is responsible. This shocks him because he values order, and yet there seems to be no justice in the world.

In "The Grand Inquisitor" chapter, Ivan tells a fable based in the Spanish Inquisition in which the Catholic Inquistor judges Christ, who has returned. He condemns Christ to death saying he valued freedom of faith over mankind's happiness (in ignorance of freedom).

This small book concludes with the incredible story of Father Zossima. In the "Russian Monk," Dostoevsky explains the old Russian, holistic vision of sobornost (love of the entire world and one's taking responsibilty for the sins of all). In this worldview, if all choose to follow it, all will serve all and the world will be a paradise.

Dostoevsky's storytelling is very emotional, and not so much picturesque. But there is so much impact in his words and message! This book is one of my all-time favorites, and I cannot wait to read "The Brothers Karamazov" in its entirity. This, probably, could also serve as a great introduction to Dostoevsky.

Definitely worth a look
Guignon's essay is borne out of and reflects such a genuine enthusiasm that it's ultimately worthwhile to read it just for fun even if you happen to disagree with his interpretation of the fable. It certainly provoked me into returning to and re-reading Dostoevsky's tale.
